Eating a plant-based diet can be healthy and nutritious. Current advice for healthy eating is the same for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. That being, a diet that is:
- Low in saturated fat, salt and sugar
- High in fibre
Research shows that although only 2-3% of the UK population is vegetarian or vegan, although 34% of us have made a conscious choice to decrease our overall meat intake. This is likely due to the health and environmental benefits that have been highlighted recently.
The benefits of a plant-based diet:
- Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes
- Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol
- Promoting a healthy body weight
- Reduced risk of certain types of cancers
