Spread The Word Throughout Back Care Awareness Week
Back Care Awareness Week runs through 8-12 October, bringing to the forefront the importance of back care, correct posture, musculoskeletal awareness and the severe and chronic impact it can have.
Back pain is one of the major disabling health conditions among older adults. An estimated 10 million working days are lost per annum due to musculoskeletal disorders, contributing to 41% of work related illnesses.
Evidence suggests that prevalence rates of back pain increases with age, and even more so when spending 4 or more hours per day sat down. Back pain can be extremely debilitating, hindering everything you do.
So what can you do to alleviate the stress on your back and minimise your risk of this complaint?
- Avoid foods high in sugar and saturated fat and they cause over activity in the immune system, which can lead to joint pain
- Partaking in suitable exercise will help to strengthen your muscles and therefore reduce aches and pains
- Correct posture is vital, and should be maintained throughout the day. Slouching at your desk or lifting heavy items incorrectly is a fast track to back pain complaints
Our new Health & Wellbeing Roadshows feature a ‘posture’ zone, providing further information on alleviating the risk and providing you with resources and knowledge to steer clear or back complaints in the future.
