What Is In My Food? Part 2

03.06.2015

Food nutrition labels and packaging contain a number of statements that could be misinterpreted or simply misunderstood.

Over the next few weeks, we will be decoding these statements so that you know exactly what you're buying and eating.

Here in part 2, we are focussing on the statement 'No Added Sugar/Unsweetened'..

What this means:

'No added sugar' or 'unsweetened' doesn't mean that the food or drink product will have a low or no sugar content. The item in question could be high in natural sugars (such as concentrated fruit juices), it could also contain artificial sweeteners that are highly damaging to your health and wellbeing.

Making it healthy:

Food and drink items that state that they have no added sugar are likely to be highly processed and contain high amounts of naturally occurring sugars, artificial additives and sugar alcohols such as lactitol, sorbitol and xylitol. With this in mind, we make this very simple in that in order to avoid falling at this hurdle, simply avoid processed foods and drinks and stick to good, real and honest food.

Be aware:

If you are diabetic, your sugar intake is crucial to keep track of - therefore it is worth knowing the varying forms in which sugars come in. It is also worth remembering that with a sugar surge comes a plummet in energy, this will do little to enable you to fulfill your potential with what ever it is you are doing. Finally, the sugar alcohols mentioned earlier also have the ability to act as laxatives - now isn't that a pleasant thought!

Three reasons why artificial sweeteners could be making you fat.
