Supporting Movember Through Healthy Living

19.10.2017

You may begin to see unusual and unexpected facial hair on men throughout November; this is a sign of support for Movember. Movember foundation’s aim is to raise awareness around 3 key areas of men’s health - prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.

Prostate cancer

  • Approximately 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in the UK
  • Increased risk factors: Aged over 50, a family history, black men, being obese

Testicular cancer

  • Approximately 1 in 195 men will get testicular cancer in the UK
  • Increased risk factors: Being taller than average, white men, a family history, fertility challenges, being in your 30s

Mental health disorders

  • Just over three out of four suicides are by men, making it the biggest cause of death for men under 35
  • 12.5% of men are suffering from a mental health condition

Advocating a strong sense of health and wellbeing is the motivating factor throughout the Movember Foundation, enabling greater research, education and funding.

The Healthy Employee also advocates this ethos, encouraging a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Food plays a vital role in establishing the best form of health, with healthy food choices enabling a stronger immune system, improved mood and greater resilience and energy. This gives you the very first defense against illness.

There have been countless studies showing the link between unhealthy food choices and certain illnesses, including cancer and anxiety. One study showed that for every 4 extra inches on top of healthy waist measurement, men will be increasing their risk of developing prostate cancer by a further 13%. The World Cancer Research Fund stated that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables does have a protective effect and may decrease the risk of certain cancers.

Recognising the signs and symptoms of any of these illnesses is vital, but living a healthy and balanced lifestyle will stand you in good stead for lowering your risk of any illness.
